PTSD taught me an important lesson: take breaks when stress gets high. It’s easy to want to push through and just do, do, do. But I know I’ve got to stop when my old friend anxiety shows up. When I hit pause I like to hit the trails, digital detox or surf. I’m hittin’ reset hard this weekend: today trails, tomorrow digital and hot spring detox at Esalen and Monday has the promise of waves.
At the heart of stress management is self awareness. You don’t need to know all the mysteries of who you are, by any means! It’s as simple as being able to notice when you’re at a limit and stressed out. And then know the things that bring you peace. For me it’s nature. What is it for you? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The last part is just caring for yourself enough to stop and do those things LONG ENOUGH for your body to find its homeostasis. For me that’s a couple hours hiking today, allllll day soaking in the hot springs and being away from my phone tomorrow and only an hour in the ocean Monday. Might seem like a lot, but these machines of ours, our bodies, have to last a lifetime. How long and healthfully do you want to live?
